The administrator needs to gather records of a representative set of user actions performed on a regular basis so that these tests can be used as a benchmark for the system. The following user actions can be recorded:

  • Find a specific document by full name.

  • Right-click the document and record the time for the shortcut menu to appear with and without Look Ahead enabled.

  • Find a set of documents using a wild card search, for example, a set of 100 documents.

  • Find a larger set of documents, for example, a set of 1000 documents.

  • Perform the previous document find tests with and without a paged query configured.

  • Find a specific tag by the full name.

  • Right-click the tag and record the time for the shortcut menu to appear with and without Look Ahead enabled.

  • Find a set of tags using a wild card search, such as PSV20*, for example, a set of 100 tags.

  • Find a larger set of tags, for example, a set of 1000 tags.

  • Perform the previous tag find tests with and without a paged query configured.

  • Run the ad hoc report for all methods in the system, sending the results to both the list view and Excel.

  • Run the same ad hoc report in the background, to evaluate the scheduler performance.

Make sure that there is nothing already in the queue waiting to be processed.

  • Open a form and record the time for the form to appear, for example, create or query for a document.

The previous tests give an indication of where the problems may be and lead to the next stage, which includes a detailed analysis of the problem to identify the cause.

The Performance Benchmarking Tool is available in the Desktop Client to record metrics on a standard set of commands or actions. These can be used to take an initial baseline on a system and to monitor or compare with new information over time.
