Maintenance organizations are confronted with health, safety, and environmental regulations continuously. The purpose of Safety management in EAM is identification of all hazardous situations, materials and activities and delivering a method to control these hazards to protect people and the environment. Note that just having a Permit to Work function does not make your operation safe. You need to have procedures in place to identify hazards, define the applicable precautions and procedures that alleviate these hazards and identify and allocate responsibilities to specific individuals making sure these precautions are taken. Safety management in EAM rests on three pillars, Safety, Lock-out and Tag-out and Permitting.

Hazards

Identify hazards, like falling, and associate pre-defined precautions to these hazards. Hazards are under revision control to prevent unauthorized changes.

Precautions

Identify precautions. For example, wear a safety harness to prevent falling. Precautions are under revision control to prevent unauthorized changes.

Safety

On the Safety tab you can identify a hazard and the associated precaution. The Safety tab can be found on many screens including equipment, parts, preventive maintenance, standard work order and of course the work order and permit to work screens. All screens support a review process to prevent unauthorized changes.

Isolation points

Identify isolation points where a motor needs to be detached from the electrical power or where a valve needs to be closed. Isolation points are under revision control to prevent unauthorized changes.

Lock-out and Tag-out

With Lock-out / Tag-out (LOTO) you setup the procedure that must be followed for a successful and safe isolation of equipment from its energy sources. The LOTO tab can be found on the equipment and permit to work screen. On the equipment screen you can setup multiple different procedures to support different types of work on the same equipment. All screens support a review process to prevent unauthorized changes to the procedure.

Lockout boxes

Define lockout boxes that can be used during the lockout / tag-out process to store keys and keep the technicians safe from unauthorized removal of applied locks.

Permit to work setup

This function allows you to define the maximum duration of a permit to work. You also specify a maximum for the duration of any extension, if needed, and how many extensions are allowed.

Permit

Define permits. Permits can best be described as permit to work templates. Once you have defined the permit you can associate it to many entities on the Permits tab. This tab can be found on many screens including equipment, preventive maintenance, and standard work order and of course the work order screens. All screens support a review process to prevent unauthorized changes. Permits attached to the work order can automatically generate a permit to work if requested.

Permit to work

The permit to work function is the core of the Safety Management module. It brings together all the above concepts into one screen that supports the complete workflow of the permit to work from inception to approval, activation and closing. Electronic signatures and an electronic archive that tracks status changes and any signature provided are fully integrated and so is an event log that tracks the most important changes to the document. Safety records and the relevant lock-out / tag-out procedure are automatically copied from the relevant entities, including equipment and the work order.
