A system is a grouping mechanism used to relate positions and assets, and systems themselves for that matter, for a variety of purposes including the following:

Cost reporting, e.g., all cost for HVAC in a certain building or all costs for all the buildings on the campus.

Easily combining the history of the individual positions and assets to the group.

Easily recognizing relationships. For example, if this position is down that means these related positions and assets are also down.
This grouping mechanism makes it easier to find positions and assets.
