Ranking equipment is not always an easy process. From person to person, and even for the same person from day to day, it is difficult to be consistent. And once a rank is assigned, which usually is when the equipment is installed, changes in environment, regulations, procedures and methods are most often not handled and therefore the rank is not regularly, or often never, revisited for existing equipment.

The equipment ranking functions in HxGN EAM were created to better support this process and the timely verification and update, if required, of the ranks. An Equipment Ranking consists of a set of defined questions (the survey). The answers to these questions can be predefined (multiple choice) or can be a straight numeric value. The predefined answers also have associated a numeric valuation. Survey questions are flagged to be manually answered or they can be automatically determined using a defined query that searches the database or can be based on a checklist result. Equipment Ranking surveys can be answered all manual, completely automatic or any combination of these two. Once the answers are provided, the system applies the valuation of these answers to defined algorithms that in turn calculate a ranking score and index. Depending on the rank you want to define, questions, answers and algorithms are likely different and are specific to that rank. In short, consistency in determining the rank and complete flexibility in defining the process and logic to determine the rank.

Add to that the ability to automatically recalculate the score and index on a regular defined interval and on top of consistency you now also add automatic adjustment based on a changing environment.

As many Equipment Rankings as required can be defined. They are separated in five main groups:

  • Reliability Indexes

  • Condition Indexes

  • Facility Condition Indexes

  • Risk Priority Indexes

  • Criticality Indexes

Each equipment can be associated to multiple Equipment Rankings to support ranking from different angles. For example, it can have a safety rank and an environment rank. Equipment Ranking can also be used to calculate a score and an index for objectives, strategies, and policies.

This document provides information about how to set up Equipment Rankings, how to apply them to equipment or objectives, individually and in batch mode, and how to work with the automatic recalculation of the rank. There is also a section with a simple example that describes the transformation of provided survey answers to questions into algorithms that convert these answers in a ranking score.
