A failure or inability of an equipment to perform one or all of its primary functions, for example, if a fuel pump cannot pump at maximum capacity this is a failure of one of its functions. If it cannot distribute fuel under low pressure to the fuel injection system and carburetor, this is another failure of the fuel pump to perform its function.
