Hardware Recommendations

  • 16 core high-end server processor (to host one HxGN SDx primary site; add 8 cores per additional site)

  • 64 GB RAM (to host one HxGN SDx primary site; add 32 GB per additional site)

  • 5 GB free disk space for software installation (plus an additional 3 GB free disk space on the drive where the TEMP folder is located)

  • 1000 BaseT or higher network interface

  • DVD drive access, either locally or through a network connection (for installation media)

    • These application server hardware recommendations are based on the assumption that this server is hosting one (1) typical HxGN SDx primary site and will host no other major Intergraph or third-party applications. Hardware sizing, especially for servers, depends on many factors such as the number of concurrent users per site, the size of the project (which translates into the size of the database), and other software that is running on the machine. Here are some guidelines for sizing a system:

      • For each additional site that is added to this server’s configuration no less than an additional 8 cores and 32 GB of memory should be added to the configuration.

      • The actual memory requirement for each site is dependent on concurrency and system usage.

      • Performance capacity planning should be undertaken for an accurate measurement.

    • These HxGN SDx application server hardware recommendations also apply to virtual servers. For virtual deployments, the same amount of RAM, disk space, and CPU capacity that would be required for a similar physical deployment should be available to the virtual machine.

Supported Operating Systems

Microsoft Windows Server 2022 (64-bit) Datacenter or Standard edition (for Update 60 onwards)

Microsoft Windows Server 2019 (64-bit) Datacenter or Standard edition is supported for Update 45 to 59.

  • The Web Server (IIS) role must be installed. In addition to the default settings, include:

    • Common HTTP Features > Static Content

    • Security > Basic Authentication

    • Application Development

      • .NET Extensibility 4.7

      • ASP.NET 4.7

  • The .NET Framework 4.7 feature must be installed. In addition to the default settings, include:

    • WCF Services

      • HTTP Activation

      • Named Pipes Activation

      • TCP Activation

  • The Windows Process Activation Service feature must be installed. In addition to the default settings, include:

    • Process Model

    • Configuration APIs

  • The Distributed Transaction Coordinator is now installed by default as part of the operating system. This service must be enabled and running for support of 32-bit COM+ application installation.

  • Windows Server is supported with UAC enabled and set to Level 3 (Default).

Software Prerequisites

  • Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015-2019, 64-bit (required as of Update 23 and later)

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2013, 64-bit (required as of Update 36 and later)

  • ASP.NET Core Windows Hosting Bundle version 6.0.x only (from version 6.0.1 onwards required as of Update 43 and later)

  • .NET Hosting Bundle version 7.0.10 or later (required as of Update 57 or later)

    • .NET Hosting Bundle version 6.0.14 or later (required as of Update 51 to Update 56)

  • Database client software (one of the following, required to communicate with the database server):

    • Oracle Enterprise Edition 19c 64-bit client software

    Oracle is not supported for 3D Project As-Built databases.

    • Microsoft SQL Server Shared Features: Client Tools Connectivity, Client Tools Backwards Compatibility, Client Tools SDK, Management Tools - Basic, Management Tools - Complete, and SQL Client Connectivity SDK (required only for importing sites in Server Manager)

    Instead of installing the SQL Server Shared Features from the product setup program, you can install two packages from the SQL Server Feature Pack, which can be downloaded from Microsoft's website:

    • Microsoft ODBC Driver 17 for Microsoft SQL Server - Windows (msodbcsql.msi)

    • Microsoft SQL Server Command Line Utilities 15 (MsSqlCmdLnUtils.msi).

  • SmartSketch V11.1. HF 12 or above, installed with the SmartSketch CAD Translators and Programming Tools custom installation options (only required for automatic hotspotting with the SmartConverter and using the Data Capture Drawing Reader Pre-processor on the client machine)

    • For Update 36 to Update 51, use SmartSketch V11.0.

    • For Update 35 and earlier, use SmartSketch 2018.

    Some SmartSketch installations require SmartPlant License Manager. For more information, see SmartSketch Hardware and Software Recommendations.

SmartPlant Markup Plus

For Updates 36 and later, SmartPlant Markup Plus Server is no longer required. The PDFTron view control is used for View and Markup of third-party and some Hexagon file formats. For more information, see Important news about compatible software and related tools.

For Updates 35 and earlier, SmartPlant Markup Plus Server is required on the servers where the HxGN SDx Server and Remote Services components are installed. If these components are installed on separate servers, SmartPlant Markup Plus Server is required on both servers.

License Service component

If the License Service component is installed on the application server (so that the application server will also act as a license server), the following additional software is required:

  • Intergraph Smart Licensing 2019 client software

  • Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015-2019, 64-bit, is required by the Smart Licensing software on whatever server hosts the Licensing service (as of SDx Update 18 and later)

File Service component

If the File Service component is installed on the application server (so that the application server will also act as a file server), the following additional software is required to support the noted functionality:

  • Smart Interop Publisher 16.x or 17.x with latest HFs (required for viewing certain 2D drawings and Smart 3D models in Hexagon web-based applications, such as the Web Client) for Update 37 and later

    • Smart Interop Publisher 16.0 or 16.1 (required for viewing certain 2D drawings and Smart 3D models in Hexagon web-based applications, such as the Web Client) for Update 36 and earlier

    The 2D drawing file formats that require Smart Interop Publisher include .igr, .pid, .sma, .spe, .sha, and .zyq. The Smart 3D model file formats include .zvf and .vue.

  • MicroStation V8i SS3 and RealDWG 2013 SP1 (required for viewing 3D V8 .dgn files and 3D .dwg files containing proxy objects in Hexagon web-based portal applications, such as Web Client)

  • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x64 Redistributable package (required to be installed on the same server as the File Service component for Update 42 and later)

    • Microsoft Visual C++ 2013 x86 Redistributable package (required to be installed on the same server as the File Service component for Update 25 to Update 41)
