Integrating the SmartPlant Enterprise tools standardizes and improves communication among these tools over the course of designing, constructing, and operating a plant. Working in an integrated environment manages data exchange among these tools, which enables sharing and re-use of information throughout the plant lifecycle.

SmartPlant Enterprise combines one or more authoring tools, such as Smart 3D, Smart Electrical, Smart Instrumentation, Smart P&ID, and Aspen Basic Engineering with a SmartPlant Foundation data warehouse so that data can be published and retrieved.

SmartPlant Enterprise provides the following features:

  • User-controlled or manual workflows for managed data exchange, including To Do Lists, e-mail notifications, versioning, approval/release, and configuration control

  • Transfer of engineering data from one tool to another, eliminating the need for manual re-entry of data

  • Management of change resulting from ongoing engineering in upstream applications

  • Accessibility of engineering information to other collaborators without requiring the original engineering tools

  • Recording of change in data as it moves through the plant lifecycle

  • Correlation of shared objects from multiple authoring tools. For example, the full definition of a pump may come from multiple disciplines (electrical, mechanical, and so forth), and the data may come from different authoring tools.

Whenever you publish, retrieve, or register from an authoring tool, you use a SmartPlant Foundation license. That license remains open on that machine until the authoring tool application is closed, at which time it is released and available for use elsewhere.

For specific information about using an authoring tool in an integrated environment, refer to the section later in this book for your authoring tool.
