A project is a logical unit of data that is related to a plant. A project is used for making controlled, incremental changes to the data in a plant. There can be multiple projects for a plant at any given time.

The identity of objects within a project is the same as their identity within the plant. All projects of a plant share the same data dictionary and the same reference data that is used by the plant. All projects of a plant share the same plant hierarchy, with a few exceptions as noted later.

The scope of a project may be limited so that it deals only with a subset of the drawings and plant items that exist within the plant. Changes made to items in a project do not immediately affect the corresponding items in the plant. A project may be completed and merged back into the plant, or canceled and discarded without affecting the plant.
