One of the most important steps of symbol creation is to map the dimensions in your symbol to the corresponding symbol parameter in your catalog workbook. The Define Symbol Properties dialog box displays all variables and their names, values, and formulas, which remain internal to the symbol. Symbol parameters are also defined on this form; these properties are externalized to the Excel workbook bulkload file. Symbol parameters are externalized as either standard variables for standard slots or input variables for custom slots.

  1. On the Penetration Symbols toolbar, click Symbol Properties .

  2. Select the Parameters tab.

  3. Click each value in the dialog box (the corresponding graphical dimension highlights in the symbol), and type a name in the Symbol Parameter box. Click Apply after entering each parameter.

SHARED Tip To avoid adding multiple symbol parameters that define the same types of attributes to the catalog, naming conventions should be developed by the reference data designer. The conventions delivered with the base catalog can be viewed on the CustomInterfaces worksheet of the slot workbook. See Symbol Naming Conventions.

The Symbol Parameter name must exactly match the name used in the CustomInterfaces worksheet of the bulkload file.
