For the software to know which graphics in the symbol file are which, you must group the graphics that define the simple physical, the detailed physical, and the points together in unique groups. You must then define which group denotes which symbol representation.

Take your time when defining symbol representations so that the correct graphic group is assigned to the correct name.

  1. Open the symbol to work with.

  2. Click Tools > Layers to display the Layer toolbar.

  3. Click Layer Status on the Layer toolbar.

  4. Double-click Detailed Physical in the list to make it the active layer. Verify that the words Detailed Physical are red, indicating that it is the active layer.

  5. Select the Active layer only option so that you see only the detailed physical layer, and then click Apply.

  6. Using the Select tool, drag a fence around all the graphics that create the detailed physical representation.

    When defining double- angle, double-channel, or similarly shaped symbols, you must group each side separately, and then group both sides together.

  7. On the Change toolbar, click Group .

  8. Click Layer Status .

  9. Double-click Simple Physical in the list to make it the active layer.

  10. Using the Select tool, drag a fence around all the graphics that create the simple physical representation.

    When defining double- angle, double-channel, or similarly shaped symbols, you must group each side separately, and then group both sides together.

  11. Click Group .

  12. Make Load Points the active layer, and then create a group out of the point graphics.

  13. Click Symbol Representation on the Cross Section Symbols toolbar.

    The Symbol Representation dialog box displays.

  14. Select the point group using the Select tool.

  15. Select Load Points from the Name box.

  16. Click Add.

  17. Click Apply.

  18. Click OK.

  19. Make Detailed Physical the active layer.

  20. Click Symbol Representation on the Cross Section Symbols toolbar.

    The Symbol Representation dialog box displays.

  21. Select the detailed physical group using the Select tool.

  22. Select Detailed Physical from the Name box.

  23. Click Add.

  24. Click Apply.

  25. Click OK.

  26. Make Simple Physical the active layer.

  27. Click Symbol Representation .

    The Symbol Representation dialog box displays.

  28. Select the simple physical group using the Select tool.

  29. Select Simple Physical from the Name box.

  30. Click Add.

  31. Click Apply.

  32. Click OK.

  33. Click File > Save.
