General
Catalog Part Number
Specifies the identifier (such as a part number or class) associated with the object to place. Recently used items are available in the list.
Browse Catalog
Displays the catalog associated with your model. Move through the hierarchy to find the objects you need or type the name of the object in the Search box. See Select from Catalog Dialog.
Space Folder
Specifies the space folder for the volume. The list displays recently used space folders that are appropriate to assign for the new volume, and the Select from Workspace and Select from Model options. The most recently used space folder displays at the top of the list.
Select from Workspace
Displays the Select Space Folder Dialog with the Workspace tab open. The workspace is the subset of the active model database you specified when you started your design session. Navigate the hierarchy to select the space folder, and then click OK.
Select from Model
Displays the Select Space Folder Dialog with the Model tab open. The model is all of the objects in the active model database, including those that are not part of your workspace. Navigate the hierarchy to select the space folder, and then click OK.
Select Parent System Hierarchy
Turns on or off the interactive selection. When this option is on, you can select the space folder in a graphic view or any of the explorers.
Name
Specifies the name of the selected volume. If the name is too long to display in the text box, point to the text box to display the complete name as a tool tip. If the name is not defined by a rule, User Defined displays. If this name is generated by a naming rule, Naming Rule displays. If you type a name in this box, Smart 3Dx automatically changes the naming rule to User Defined.
Construction Methods
Two Points
Places a volume based on two points that represent opposite vertices of the volume to place.
First Point
Allows you to select and modify the first point.
Second Point
Allows you to select and modify the second point.
Assoc Enabled/ Assoc Disabled
Creates or breaks the association between the volume and objects in the model.
Four Points
Select three points to define a base plane and a fourt point to define elevation or depth.
First Point
Allows you to select and modify the first point.
Second Point
Allows you to select and modify the second point.
Third Point
Allows you to select and modify the third point.
Fourth Point
Allows you select and modify the fourth point.
Selection
Define a rectangular volume that encloses a selected set of objects in the model.
*Fitted Volume
Places a volume fitted to the selected object.
Path
Specify a cross section, and then create a 3D path to extrude the shape along the path.
Sketch Path
Displays the Sketching Controls.
Cross Section
Draws the shape along the path you select from the list. The available cross-section shapes include:
Rectangle
Circle
Triangle
Ellipse
Hexagon
Sector
Road
TrapezeR
TrapezeC
IBeam
Properties
Displays volume properties that you can modify (for example, angles, length, and so forth). The available properties depend on the Cross Section type. This control is unavailable when the Cross Section type is set to Custom .
Grids
Create one or more volumes based on a minimum of six selected grid planes.
Assoc Enabled/ Assoc Disabled
Creates or breaks the association between the volume and objects in the model.
Place Volume by Shape
Select a pre-defined volume shape from a palette, and then provide dimensional information to define the shape size.
Shape Gallery
Specifies the shape of the volume to place. You can select the shape from the gallery of common shapes, search for a specific shape, or click Browse Catalog to open the Select from Catalog Dialog. Smart 3Dx displays a list of your most recently used shapes below the search box.
Shape Dimension Preview
Displays a preview of the shape and its dimensions.
Dimensional Properties
Specifies the size of the volume to place. The available dimensional properties depend on the shape you select from the shape gallery. For example, a circular cylinder uses length and diameter properties, while a sphere only uses the diameter property. A hexagonal solid uses length, height, and two width properties. The dimensional properties available for a shape display below the shape gallery.
Move
Moves the selected volume.
Move From Position (Ctrl + T)
Specifies the point from which to start the move.
Move To Position (T)
Specifies the point at which to finish the move.
No Constraint (CTRL + 6)
Objects are free to move in any direction.
East
Y-axis and Z-axis coordinates are locked. Object moves freely along the X-axis.
North
X-axis and Z-axis coordinates are locked. Object moves freely along the Y-axis.
Elevation
X-axis and Y-axis coordinates are locked. Object moves freely along the Z-axis.
Elevation Plane (CTRL + 1)
Z-axis coordinate is locked. Object moves freely in the X-Y coordinate plane.
East-West Plane (CTRL + 3)
X-axis coordinate is locked. Object moves freely in the Y-Z coordinate plane.
North-South Plane (CTRL + 2)
Y-axis coordinate is locked. Object moves freely in the X-Z coordinate plane.
Rotate (Ctrl + R)
Starts rotation for the selected object. See Rotate equipment for one example of how to use these controls.
Press RIGHT and select Rotate to rotate the object 90 degrees clockwise about the active axis.
Press LEFT and select Rotate to rotate the object 90 degrees counter-clockwise about the active axis.
Angle Step
Specifies the angle about the axis that the object rotates when you select Step Rotation . Enter a value in the Angle Step box, or select a blank space in the control panel to remove the input focus from the box.
Press G to set the focus to the active graphic view.
Press CTRL+LEFT to rotate the object clockwise one step about the Axis.
Press CTRL+SHIFT+LEFT to rotate the object counter-clockwise one step about the Axis.
Step Rotation
Rotates the object corresponding to the defined angle one step about the active axis. This control is not available if Angle Step is undefined or is set to zero.
Select a blank space in the control panel to remove the input focus, and then press G to set the focus to the active graphic view.
Press SHIFT to rotate the object counter-clockwise.
Active Axis for Rotation (UP arrow)
Specifies the axis about which Smart 3Dx rotates the object. The available options include: X-Axis, Y-Axis, and Z-Axis.
This option does not display for grids.
Reposition Rotate Origin
Moves the rotation triad to a position that you specify. The rotation triad indicates the point about which the rotation occurs. Select a point in the graphic view to specify the new location.
Reset Rotate Origin
Moves the rotation triad origin to the origin of the selected object.
If keyboard shortcuts are not working when you move or rotate objects, select the application title bar to reset the focus. Smart 3Dx indicates focus by displaying the bright blue border.
Merge Volumes
Merge multiple existing volumes into one volume. Unlike volumes created using Volume Bound By Spaces, the act of creating a merged volume is not reversible. If you delete the merged volume, the software removes all the volumes that were merged from the database.
Volume Bound By Spaces
Select more than one volume to create a volume bound by spaces. This command is particularly useful in placing volumes defined as areas that cannot overlap. By using existing areas to define a new volume, you can avoid the problem of creating conflicts among defined volumes in the model. Unlike Merge Volumes, deleting a bound by spaces volume deletes the individual integrity of the sub-volume, but does not delete the sub-volume. If you later remove a volume from the bound space, the software leaves the removed volume in the database.
Completion
Cancel (ESC)
Cancels all changes and exits the command.
Finish (CTRL + ENTER)
Saves all changes and exits the command.
Finish and Modify (CTRL + SHIFT + ENTER)
Saves all changes, and then selects the objects for modification.
Finish and Repeat (SHIFT + ENTER)
Saves all changes, and then restarts the command.
