Reporting completion helps you track work to be done for components in an IWP, time and effort to complete work, and work completed.
Work steps are associated with components during a Smart Construction retrieve based on a personalized rules of progress configuration workbook, or you can manually add them. The work steps help plan the work to be completed for a component.
Work steps in Smart Construction:
An IWP can contain multiple components. Each component can have multiple work steps, each with its own purpose, such as Installation or Testing. The following diagram describes this relationship:
How work steps are created:
-
Work steps are created and generated while documents are retrieved into Smart Construction. Work steps are created based on the purpose and discipline of the associated component. For example, a pipe may have two work steps created for it, Installation and Testing. For details on how rules of progress data are generated and updated, see Configure the Rules of Progress.
-
In order to prevent rounding errors, the last work step's man hours are the total hours minus the hours on all the other steps.
-
A system setting, configured by the administrator, sets the rounding decimal point for total man hours and individual work step man hours
How work steps are added and removed:
-
When you delete an IWP, the IWP and all its components are deleted in order to release the work steps for reuse.
-
When you remove a component from an IWP, the work steps associated with the component become dissociated from the IWP. And, all manually added work steps are deleted.
-
When you remove a manually added component from an IWP, the component and any manually added work steps are deleted.
-
If a drawing is removed from an IWP, all components from that drawing are removed, unless they are also related to another drawing on that IWP.
Other work step behavior:
-
If a drawing is added to an IWP, the user is prompted to add its components, components as spools, or just the drawing.
-
A system setting controls whether or not a user can manually add work steps to a published component.
-
Users can edit the units of a manually added component, until progress is marked for a manually added component.
-
If a component has a planned quantity of zero, all work is considered 100% complete, and the quantity complete box is not shown for the component or its work steps.
-
If progress has been reported for a component or a work step, man hours and other details for the component or the work step cannot be modified.
-
You cannot add labor adjustment factors to an IWP or a work step with progress reported.
You cannot move components or work steps from one IWP to another if progress is reported. To move the component or work step, clear the progress, then drag the component or work step to the target IWP.
Types of work steps

Type of Work Step |
Explanation |
---|---|---|
Work step generated from the rules of progress |
When the rules of progress data is configured and generated, work steps are automatically associated with components during retrieve. For more information, see Configure the Rules of Progress. |
|
Manually-created work step |
Users can manually add work steps after a component has been added to an IWP. Administrators can also define work steps that a user can manually select to add to an IWP. For more information, see Manually add work steps to a component. |
|
SID work step generated from the rules of progress |
When SID work steps are configured and generated with the rules of progress, the SID work steps are automatically associated with components during retrieve. For more information, Select a Standard Installation Detail (SID) for a component. |
|
Manually-created SID work step |
Users can manually select a SID work step to add to a component. Administrators can configure the SID work steps in the SmartPlant Foundation Desktop Client. For more information, see Configure SID work steps to automatically associate with a component. |
