The software allows you to perform various actions in an open EDE view. You can do the following:

Search the EDE View Grid

The search engine is applied to the EDE grid slightly differently depending on the number of grid rows retrieved.

Next to the Search field the Page Display field displays Current Page or All Pages this is selected by the software and is dependent on the number of rows retrieved.

The Page Display is read only and is to show you which search type is in use on the grid view.

  • Current Page - Displays the number of rows set in the Page Size field of the View EDE Properties dialog box, as a page (the default is set to 50 rows, with up to 3000 rows that can be displayed in a single page).

In the Search field, type 3 or more characters. As you type, suggested items that match the search criteria are displayed under the Search field and highlighted in yellow in the grid. To clear your search, click the X on the right.

  • Only the first four matching strings are displayed under the Search field, all matching strings are displayed in the grid.

  • Click on a string displayed under the Search field to locate the string in the grid.

  • A search using a wildcard (*) must be used with an alphanumeric character.

  • If nothing matches your search criteria the Search field is displayed with a red border.

  • All Pages - Automatically selected when more than one page (more than the number of rows set in the Page Size field of the View EDE Properties dialog box) is available. You select which page to view by typing the page number or using the Page controls at the bottom of the grid.

The All Pages search does not search as you type. The search applies your criteria first, only to the identifier fields. If no match is found then nothing is displayed. If your search criteria are found in an identifier field, then the rest of your query fields are searched and the results displayed in the grid.

Press Enter on the keyboard to start your search.

SHARED Tip A progress bar is displayed during the search.

Group Columns in the Grid

To group your data by a specific attribute, drag the column header to the Group by area where it says, "Drag a column header and drop it here to group by that column". You can group more than one attribute, by dragging another column header to the Grouped By area. The order in which you apply the groupings changes the filtered results. The filtered results are additive. This means that each additional column header you add will be based on the current filter.

Sorting Items in the Grid

The first time you open an EDE view, the results are displayed in an ascending order based on the Item Name column. To reverse the sorting, click on the column header. A little sort arrow in the column header displays the sort order. Click again to remove the sorting. Press and hold the SHIFT key and click columns to sort by more than one column. Data in columns is sorted alphabetically.

When performing ascending or descending sorts on columns in the EDE View, all cells with NULL values do not participate in the sorting, and always display at the top of the report.
All cells with empty fields do participate in the sorting, and display at the top when sorting a column in ascending order, and at the bottom, when sorting in descending order. The sorting is applied to all pages of the EDE, not just the first page.

Filter Items in the Grid

  1. To filter your data, click EDE Complex Filter, in the column header.

  2. In the dialog box that opens do one of the following:

    • In the top section - select from the list of values listed in the column. The filtered results will display in the column automatically, as you check the boxes of your preference.
SHARED Tip Type in the Search field to narrow the available selection if required.

    • In the Show rows with value that section - select the required operator. Type a value in the blank field, and select And/Or.

  3. When you have finished adding criteria to your filter, click Filter to display the filtered results.

  4. Click Clear Filter to remove the filter criteria from the specific column.

  • The Distinct Filter displays up to 1000 filtered values.

  • A filtered column displays a blue colored icon Filtered Column Icon.

  • If a column includes empty values, a check box with the value [null] appears in the list.

Filter Items using the Complex Filter

To use the complex filter, click EDE Complex Filter in the top right corner of the grid.

The Complex Filter performs advanced filtering of data from multiple columns simultaneously in the EDE View. The Complex Filter allows you to generate filters in stages, where each criterion can be built on a subsequent row of the previous criteria.

The complex filter contains the following:

  • A drop down of all the column headers in the current EDE View.

  • Operators: arithmetic, comparison, and reference.

  • A blank value field, for a manual input of value.

  • A logical operator, which creates a relation between two or more filters. It can be either AND or OR.

When running the filter, the software applies all the AND logical operators first and then the OR logical operators are applied to the result.

Once you click the Filter button, the filtered data is displayed in the main window, and the Filter button changes its color to blue Filtered Column Icon.

Clear Filter - clears all the filter values. For more information, see Working with Complex Filters.

Add a Column in the Grid

From the Attribute Explorer in the EDE Actions tab:

  • Drag the attribute to the grid and place it where you want.

  • Double-click the attribute to add after the last column in the EDE.

Move Columns in the Grid

Click and drag a column header right or left and drop it in the new location.

Edit the Data in the Grid (Edit mode)

Double-click any cell in the grid and type in your new content or change existing content. Click outside the cell to save the contents.

When populating cells with numeric values, enter a number within the minimum and maximum values that an integer data type can handle, between 0 and 2147483647.

Copy/Paste is not possible while in Edit mode.

Copy and Paste Data

Select the cell (single-click) with the data you want to copy, right-click and from the shortcut menu click Copy. Select the cell (single-click) where you want to paste the data, right-click and from the shortcut menu click Paste.

  • A dashed border around the copied cell/s indicate the data has been copied and ready for pasting.

  • The standard windows keyboard shortcuts can also be used.

  • A green border is displayed surrounding the pasted cell indicating the copy/paste was successful.

  • A red border indicates a failure to paste the copied contents, and an error message is displayed.

  • An orange colored border indicates that the copy/paste is waiting to be saved to the database.

To copy and paste from multiple cells, press and hold the CTRL key, and use the cursor to select (single-click) the cells required. Use the right-click shortcut menu to copy the selected cells. Select (single-click) the cells in the grid where you want to paste the copied information and use the right-click shortcut menu to paste. A green or red border indicates success or failure of the copy/paste process.

The copied information will be cleared (and so will the copy – dash indication) from the clipboard and not pasted, in these cases:

  • When the selected cell is in Edit mode (double-clicking on the cell).

  • When one or more of these changes are made to the EDE layout:

    • Edit of the EDE definition.

    • Column addition.

    • Column re-order.

    • Splitting screen.

    • Applying a filter.

    • Sorting

Copy and Paste Data - Troubleshooting

If the copy/paste was not successful, one of the following messages is displayed in the ribbon bar:

  • Cannot paste the selected cells:

    • Check you have selected destination cells.

    • Check that the selected cells are not in Edit mode.

    • Make sure that the selected destination layout matches the copied cells layout. The destination area needs to contain the same layout of rows and columns as the source.

    • Check you are not trying to perform multiple pasting with the same content.

  • Cannot set lookup value from different source:

You are trying to paste a value from a cell where the values are from a select list to a cell that cannot contain select list values. For example, a value copied from a select list of instrument manufacturers cannot be pasted to a cell with a select list of model numbers. You can only copy select list value to a cell with the same select list type or to a blank cell.

  • Cannot set value to read-only cell:

You are trying to paste a value into a cell whose properties have been set to read-only.

  • Item cannot be pasted into list:

You are trying to paste a value from a cell whose properties have a dependency on another property. For example, if a panel model in a cell is related to manufacturer Honeywell, it can only be pasted into another panel model cell for which the related manufacturer is also Honeywell.

Color Code Column Headers in the Grid

You can color code an Item Type's properties. Once selecting a color, the selected color is displayed at the top of the column header. The color is displayed for all properties associated with the specific item type, across all EDE views.

For example, if you assign a red color to Instrument Name, any EDE View that includes the Instrument Name column header, will have a red line marked on the top.

To color code column headers in the grid, click the Color Selector EDE_ItemColorSelectionin the EDE Explorer. Select a different color for each item type from the list, and close the dialog box.

The colors that appear on the bottom of the column header represent item types with the Name property. Columns with Name item types, display the same color underlining the column header as the color on top of the header.

Use the Right-Click Shortcut Menu in the Grid

The shortcut menu provides commands for manipulating items in the grid. These commands are similar to the commands in the Domain Explorer (for example: New, Actions, Reports, Properties, Duplicate).

Since the grid does not represent items in a hierarchical layout, make sure when you edit a cell that it doesn't affect other items related to that cell. For example: duplicating a junction box will duplicate all the terminal strips connected to that junction box. The availability of these controls changes from item to item in the grid, and is dependent on one or more of the following conditions:

  • If an item is listed in an identifier field column, all the controls are available to it (for example an Instrument Name column, or a Tag Number column).

  • If an item is located in an identifier field column, all the controls are available.

  • If an item is located at the top of the hierarchy, only the following controls are available: New, Duplicate, and Delete.

  • If an item is a reference item, or is associated with another item, only some of the controls will be available, for example: a virtual tag, will not have all the available shortcut menu options.

  • Items in the EDE that are not listed in the Domain Explorer or in the Reference Explorer, do not have any shortcut menu options.

  • The option, Go to Item, only shows items in the current selected Unit. To view an item in another Unit, go to the Area node and clear the Filter (to display the other Units), then reselect the Go to Item option.

  • When using the Go To search functionality on a custom explorer view, the custom explorer view must be selected and all its folders expanded.

  • Not all the right-click menu options are available for all the item types.

The Copy and Paste controls are available to all items that are not of item type: Plant, Area, Unit, Project, and Domain.

Freeze Columns in the Grid

To keep information from scrolling off the screen when moving through the grid, you can freeze one or more columns to keep them in place. Hover the mouse cursor over the line dividing between the EDE Explorer and the left side of the grid, and drag the separator at the edge of the window to the right. You can drag it either over one column or over a few columns.

Edit Supporting Tables in the Grid

A column that holds data from a supporting table, displays a pencil icon Supporting Table Icon in Grid in the column header. Click the icon to open the related supporting table for editing.
Permissions to edit the supporting table is dependent on the user's Access Rights.

Apply text wrapping to a column

By default, wrapping text is not applied to the column data. Wrapping text is applied to individual columns using a shortcut menu.

Applying text wrap to a large number of columns can slow the software performance.

  • When performing a union of two EDEs, the combined EDE by default is unwrapped, even if both the EDEs had wrapped columns before the union.

  • A duplicated EDE retains the same layout as the source EDE including text wrapping that was applied to any columns.

To wrap text in a column:

  1. Right-click on a column header and from the shortcut menu, select the Wrap Text check box.

  2. Repeat this step to apply to other required columns.

To remove the Text Wrap option from a column:

Right-click on the column header and from the shortcut menu, clear the Wrap Text check box.

Wrap Text enabled is indicated with a , in the EDE Actions > Layout History.
