The use of any special characters in an EDE Item, an EDE filter item name or as an EDE filter parameter, causes the EDE to display the wrong results.

This topic explains how to generate (Engineering Data Editor) EDE views. There are several methods to generate an EDE view, depending on how the EDE view is created and where it retrieves the data. The final output results in a different EDE view.

After you generate an EDE view, you manipulate and customize the EDE views in the EDE window and save them in a folder in the EDE Explorer. All EDE views saved in the folder hierarchy can be viewed by all users in Smart Instrumentation, with the exception of EDE views saved to the Private folder. These EDE views are visible only to the user who created them.

The links below the diagram describe the four methods for generating EDE views.

  • It is not possible to generate EDE views automatically for Specification, Data Dimensional and Piping data sheets, Document Binder packages, or Fieldbus Tag Number Lists. To generate those views use the Browser Manager to create a browser view. You access the Browser Manager from the menu Modules > Browser.

  • Access rights are defined in the Administration Module, if you do not have access rights (Access Denied) for a specific module or activity, for example; Calculation, Hook-Ups, or Wiring, you cannot view its data from a query, preview a query and see the data, or open an EDE from the EDE Explorer and view its data.

  • When opening an EDE view for the first time based on a predefined shipped browser (without a predefined sort), the EDE displays the columns and data in a different order than that of the browser. There is no change in the data.

  • After upgrading Smart Instrumentation, an EDE View that was converted from a Browser View with complex filters rounds up any numeric values to the nearest two decimal places. For this reason, the EDE's filter may retrieve more data values than you originally had in the filtered Browser View. When you open a converted EDE View for the first time, you see the filtered numerical data in a two-digit (after the period) format. In addition, when you open the Complex Filter, the filter value entered is also converted to a two-digit format. If you want to re-populate your converted EDE View with the full set of data, clear the filter.

  • Editing and updating common See-List instrument properties in the EDE results in just the property of the selected instrument being updated, not all the See-List instruments with common properties. To edit or update See-List instruments with common properties you must update them in the Specification Module.
