This topic describes the basic flow of activities needed when using Honeywell Experion PKS controllers in your plant design.

In an integrated environment, after retrieving DCS vendor data, under certain circumstances the software can create two identical CS tags, this occurs when you have selected the Create CS Tags Automatically check box in the Instrument Profile. After retrieving the DCS vendor data, in the To Do List you will see the Create tasks for the CS tag and the instrument. Running these tasks creates the CS Tag and the instrument but because the Instrument Profile has the Create CS Tags Automatically check box selected, an identical CS tag is also created and is visible in the Domain Explorer. To stop this from happening you must clear the Create CS Tags Automatically check box before running the Create tasks.

  • Before publishing or retrieving Honeywell Experion PKS data for the first time, make sure you perform the prerequisite activities of retrieving the Honeywell Experion PKS definitions, updating your plant design with the relevant Honeywell controllers and so forth.

  • You can perform each of the stages in this work flow multiple times during the life cycle of the project.

Retrieve Honeywell Definitions

Retrieving the Honeywell Experion PKS definitions is a prerequisite for both publishing and retrieving Honeywell Experion PKS data. The Honeywell Experion PKS definitions that you download and retrieve in Smart Instrumentation constitute the engineering library of the Honeywell controllers.

Publish Data for Honeywell

After you complete the design of your plant using Honeywell Experion PKS controllers, follow this procedure to publish (export) the required data for accurate and efficient Honeywell Experion PKS configuration. The software publishes a partial set of the Smart Instrumentation database containing all the relevant information including the Honeywell Experion PKS configuration, I/O assignment, instrument tags and so on. For example, the process does not export specification data.

Retrieve Honeywell Data

Follow this procedure to retrieve (import) data from the Honeywell Experion PKS controllers. The software retrieves the relevant data from the published .xml file.

If using fieldbus tags, after retrieving the Honeywell Experion PKS data but before running any To Do List tasks, you must make associations between device types for Foundation Fieldbus or HART instruments with instrument manufacturers and Smart Instrumentation instrument types. For more information see Associate Device Types for DCS Vendors.

Retrieve Data for Honeywell Instruments without I/O Card Termination Blocks

Follow this procedure to retrieve (import) data from Honeywell Experion PKS instruments that do not have I/O Card Termination Blocks. The software retrieves the relevant data from the published .xml file.

If you are using Fieldbus tags, after retrieving the Honeywell data but before running any To Do List tasks, you must make associations between device types for Foundation Fieldbus or HART instruments with instrument manufacturers and Smart Instrumentation instrument types. For more information see Associate Device Types for DCS Vendors.
