The Show EDE function allows you to select a tree view node in the Domain Explorer, and view its properties in an EDE View format. The Show EDE is available on any item or folder containing child items, except for the Domain Explorer root node, the Plant, the Area, and the Unit nodes. For the Show EDE to display the item/s you have selected, you need to first generate an EDE View which is based on the same Item type. Subsequently, this EDE View must be saved in the EDE Explorer, under the Private folder, hence it can only be viewed by the user who created it.

The following procedure explains how to define an EDE View for the Show EDE function.

  1. In the Reference Explorer, expand the Query Builder folder.

  2. Create a query for the Item Type you want to later select for the Show EDE function. For more information on how to create a query, see Create a Query.

Make sure that the query you create retrieves the data you are expecting to get from the Show EDE function.

  3. Generate an EDE View from the query you created in the previous step, see Generate an EDE View from a Query.

  4. Save your EDE View in the EDE Explorer > Private Folder.

  5. Open Domain Explorer again, select and right-click an item or folder (whose immediate child items are plant items, not folders) from the tree view. On the shortcut menu, select Show EDE. The item/folder you select must be from the same item type as the EDE View you generated in step 3.

  6. On the Show EDE dialog, review that your selected folder or item is populated in the Selected Item or Selected Folder field.

  7. Select the required item type from the Item Type drop-down list.

  8. From the EDE View drop-down list, select the EDE that you created in step 3.

  9. Select OK.

  • When using the Show EDE on a filtered folder or on a filtered item in the Domain Explorer, the filter is also applied to the EDE View. As a result, the EDE View opens with a subset of data, which satisfies the filtered criteria you previously specified in the Explorer Filter. In addition, any filter you apply to the EDE View that you plan to select as your Show EDE, is also applied. In this case the Show EDE opens with a subset of data satisfying both filters. The filtered EDE View is distinguished by a Filtered Column Iconlocated at the top right corner of the EDE grid. You have the option to cancel the filtered EDE view. To cancel the filter, select Filtered Column Icon, and from the Complex Filter dialog, select Clear Filter.

  • Show EDE is disabled on the Drawing Block Types folder, and its Block Types.

  • When a Cable or Panel has an identical name in the Domain and Reference Explorers, the Show EDE function displays information on both items. To narrow the results to the cable or panel you selected from the Domain Explorer, see Show EDE on Items with Identical Name .

The following example shows you how to create a Query in Query Builder, then generate an EDE View template, and finally retrieve the correct data for a Line or a Loop when selecting it in the Show EDE dialog. This EDE View provides a correct representation of all the Instruments associated with a Loop, and then all the Instruments under a Line (including those that are not associated with the Loop).

  1. Open the Reference Explorer and locate the Queries folder.

  2. Open the Queries folder, right-click on the Query Builder folder and select New > Query.

  3. On the Query Properties (New) dialog, type a name for the query in the Name field.

  4. Select the Suppress Repeating Values check box, if you don't want to display in the grid values that are repeated more than once.

    • When working with a Microsoft SQL database, selecting Suppress Repeating Values in combination with Note fields, causes the query/EDE to display incorrectly.

  • When any of the following Note attributes belonging to specific Item Types are included in your query, the complete EDE appears blank.

    Item Type

    Attribute Category

    Attribute

    Instrument

    General Properties

    Instrument Note

    Loop

    Identification

    Loop Note

    Spec Sheet

    Spec Note

    Maintenance Event Activities

    Custom Fields

Work Activity Text — User Defined Fields (UDFs) 001, 002, and 003.

  • When adding one of these Note attributes, when the software detect that it is not compatible with your query a message is displayed on the screen, but the software does not remove the attribute from the query, this you must do manually.

  • Browser views that were converted to EDEs after upgrading from version 2013 that include any Note field, appear completely blank when opened. To correct these issues, in the Edit EDE Definition dialog box clear the Suppress Repeating Values check box.

  1. Select OK.

  2. In the Query Builder, from the Item Type Explorer drag and drop the following items to the Definitions window:

    • Instrument.

    • Loop.

    • Line.

    : Select the following relations:

  5. Right-click , to open the Relation dialog between the Instrument and the Line.

  6. Select Display all Instrument records and only those Line records that are related.

  7. Select Close or select outside the Relations dialog to close the dialog.

  8. From the module toolbar, select Save Query (Save Query).

  9. In the Query Builder folder, right-click the query that you have just created and select Actions > Generate EDE View.

  10. On the View Properties (new) dialog, type a name for the EDE view.

  13. Open the Domain Explorer > Loops folder, right-click one of the Loops, and select Show EDE.

  14. From the EDE View drop-down list, select the EDE View that you created in step 13.

  15. Repeat the same procedure as in step 17, on a Line under the Lines folder.
