Smart Instrumentation Version
2018 (12.0)

Upgrading to Smart Instrumentation 13.1 from versions of Smart Instrumentation prior to Smart Instrumentation 2018 requires upgrading to SmartPlant Instrumentation 2016 SP1 first due to changes in the database structure.

After the upgrade to 2016 Service Pack 1 is completed, you must:

  1. Rebuild stored procedures and triggers for all domains.

  2. Rebuild projects in As-Built domains.

After completing the upgrade to Service Pack 1, you can then upgrade to your new version of Smart Instrumentation.

Oracle users, when upgrading from SmartPlant Instrumentation 2016 SP1 to Smart Instrumentation 2018 must have both Oracle server 64-bit and Oracle client 64-bit installed as well as the 32-bit Oracle client. This is because certain functions such as backup and upgrade now use 64-bit client database components, while the 32-bit client is required for running Smart Instrumentation.

The Setup Utility installs the Smart Instrumentation software and allows you to install any additional optional features you require, for example; an example seed file such as in_demo or library like the CAD Block library. You can install all or only some of the features, depending on the amount of free space available on your hard disk, and your engineering needs.  For details of features that are required for working with Smart Instrumentation, see List of Smart Instrumentation Features.

You run Setup when:

  • Installing a new version of Smart Instrumentation.

  • Upgrading an existing Smart Instrumentation installation.

  • Adding selected Smart Instrumentation features to an existing installation.

  • Smart Instrumentation doesn't support Citrix Seamless Mode.

  • If you add any features to an existing installation, make sure that the version of the features you install is the same as the version of the existing installation.

  • If you upgrade your current software version, it is recommended that you backup your current database before you start the actual installation process.

For details on how to back up an entire Oracle or SQL Server database, you need to use Oracle or SQL Server tools.  For details, see Database Backup and Restore in the Smart Instrumentation Configuration and Maintenance Guide.

You install Smart Instrumentation either on the computer where you installed the database server (file server) or on the local station.  The following are some of the environment characteristics that you should consider when deciding where to install Smart Instrumentation:

  • Free disk space

    • The computer where you install Smart Instrumentation should have free disk space sufficient for the installation.

    • The Windows temporary file location (commonly located on the C drive), needs to have a minimum of 4 GB for the temporary files Smart Instrumentation copies before the installation begins.

  • Network performance — Most databases operate on local networks.  Therefore, the local network data transfer rate significantly influences the overall performance of the database platform and Smart Instrumentation.  For this reason, if the local network under-performs, install Smart Instrumentation on the local station to be able to work faster with Smart Instrumentation features.

  • Smart Instrumentation components upgrade — You should consider the amount of work involved in upgrading or re-installing all the copies of Smart Instrumentation on the local network, in case you install Smart Instrumentation on the stations.

Before you start the installation process, make sure that your computer (file server or local station) has access to a CD-ROM or DVD drive.  If your machine does not have access to a suitable drive, you need to copy all the installation files from the installation media to your local hard disk.

If you are upgrading to Smart Instrumentation 13.1 from an existing installation, you must uninstall SmartPlant Instrumentation before installing the newer version. It is important that all components installed with SmartPlant Instrumentation, for example Rule Manager, Import Utility, Enhanced Reports Utility and so forth, are closed before you attempt to remove (uninstall) SmartPlant Instrumentation.

If you have installed Smart Instrumentation Smart API, you must remove the installation before installing your new installation of Smart Instrumentation.
