To connect to a database the software looks for the intools.ini file. This file contains the information the software requires to connect to the database. If the intools.ini file doesn't exist then you must create one using the Database Profile Manager.

Connecting successfully to a database using the Database Profile Manager is dependent on running the DB Setup utility first. The DB setup application (.exe) is found in the folder where you installed Smart Instrumentation. By default that is; C:\Program Files (x86)\SmartPlant\Instrumentation. Depending on your preferred database, for more information on setting up a Smart Instrumentation database and using the DB Setup utility, see one of the following sections:

There are various ways to open the Database Profile Manager:

  • Start Smart Instrumentation, this automatically starts the Database Profile Manager when it fails to detect the intools.ini.

  • From the folder where you installed Smart Instrumentation double-click on dbprofilemanager.exe.

  • On the Start menu click All Programs > Intergraph Smart Instrumentation > Smart DBProfileManager.

In the Database Profile Manager, do the following;

  1. In the Profile name box, type a name for the profile you want to create.

  2. Under DB Details do the following:

    1. In the Database box, type the name of your database.

    2. In the Server name box, type the name of the database server.

    3. In the Database type list, select the database.

  3. Under Admin Details type the User name and Password.

    SHARED Tip By default, the user name and password for Oracle is IN_DBAMN. For SQL the user name is SPI_DBAMN and the password is SPI_DBA.

    The following special characters cannot be used in passwords, database names, file names, and so forth:

    /

    \

    [

    ]

    =

    ;

    #

    :

    "

    !

  4. Next to the Profile Name box click Test, the software checks the connection to the database.

    SHARED Tip A message is displayed if the connection was successfully completed or not.

  5. Click OK.

  • When using the Windows 10 operating system, you should be aware that the OS stores a copy of the product .ini file (only if the .ini file is read only) in the following location: C:\Users\{user name}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\SmartPlant\<product folder>\.ini, as well as in the Smart Instrumentation root folder. If you need to delete the .ini file or create a new .ini file, you must delete it from both of these folders. Deleting it just from the Smart Instrumentation folder means that login to the product is still possible using outdated information.

Due to security changes in Windows 10, users who require access to INIT/Backup, upgrade, import, and Administration functions, must have windows administrative privileges for this functionality to work correctly.

When installing Smart Instrumentation, the following error message could be displayed:

No connection profile found in the intools.ini file.
Click OK to open the DbProfileManager to create the connection profile.

When installing Smart Instrumentation, make sure to use an account that has enough privileges to edit and save the software’s configuration file (intools.ini) with the information on the database. Otherwise, the database information written to the configuration file during installation is not saved. In addition, ensure that your account has local administrative permissions to edit information in the DbProfileManager utility.

If you have already installed Smart Instrumentation, and do not want to re-install, do the following:

  1. Close Smart Instrumentation.

  2. Configure the DbProfileManager utility using an account with local administrative permissions to your computer. Re-open Smart Instrumentation.

    SHARED Tip Alternatively, you can uninstall Smart Instrumentation and reinstall it without editing the DbProfileManager utility, using an account with local administrative permissions to your computer.
