Data sheets

A data sheet can be used to view or edit a large amount of data from a small number of objects (normally one).

On creation, a relationship must be created between the data sheet definition and the class of the object in the classification tree.

Data lists

A data list is similar to a data sheet in architecture except that data lists are produced specifically to represent data from many objects of the same type. That is, data lists describe a small set of data from a large number of objects.

Data sheet templates

The term data sheet template refers to templates used by both data sheets and data lists.

A data sheet template is an Excel file that has fields with special names made up of ViewDefname.Propertyname. This mapping between a cell and a property in a view definition allows the data sheet generation process to populate the correct areas of a data sheet with the information from the database. A data sheet template also allows administrators to specify the format in which SmartPlant Foundation information should be edited.

Data sheets

Templates for data sheets are less structured than templates for data lists and there is no requirement for the defined names to be distributed in a specific way.

Data lists

A data list template must have all the view definition properties arranged on the same row throughout the template worksheet (it can use only one view definition). The identifying property of the object must be in the first column. The data list template can have only one worksheet so that macros can fill down from the defined cell. This structure allows data lists to store information from a large number of objects.

SPFDatasheetDriver

The SPFDatasheetDriver is an Excel add-in that contains edit session control macros. To ensure SmartPlant Foundation data integrity, the data is edited in a very controlled way. The data is not amended directly but through a number of VBA macros. These macros provide the functionality that helps users edit the data in a managed way and to save the data back into SmartPlant Foundation.

Data Sheet Definer

The SmartPlant Foundation Data Sheet Definer add-in must be installed on a workstation that is used to edit data sheets and data list templates.

The SmartPlant Foundation Data Sheet Definer enables you to quickly see all the view definitions and view definition properties related to a data sheet definition in a tree view and map them to the template worksheet. Properties currently mapped to the template worksheet are displayed in green in the data sheet definitions tree view. Properties that are not mapped are displayed in red. Additionally, properties may be displayed as orange if they are only partially mapped.

The SmartPlant Foundation Data Sheet Definer functionality is now delivered as a Microsoft Excel add-in. For more information on installing the SmartPlant Foundation Data Sheet Definer add-in, see Setting up Data Sheet Definer.
