This document describes the architecture of the SmartPlantĀ® Foundation, including the modules and integration software, and is intended for system administrators who need to understand the software architecture.

SmartPlant Foundation is the solution for plant information management. It ensures secure access to plant information, such as engineering designs, vendor data, purchase orders, RFQs, specification sheets, and all ancillary documents. The SmartPlant Foundation application and server architecture has been continually developed and updated to help improve usability and performance, and seamlessly uses the power of server hardware that is available today.

SmartPlant Foundation provides a modular set of functionalities, based on typical work processes to ensure that valid and consistent engineering data is shared across the system.

The SmartPlant Foundation application:

  • Easily visualizes key information from multiple complex data sources

  • Enables you to quickly and easily find information from your desktop or mobile devices

  • Allows you to view and expand objects to find related information

  • Manages plant data and project data

  • Provides a document management solution with auditable traceability

  • Allows you to relate objects to other items without being restricted to the default model

  • Provides a highly configurable and customizable system beyond what is delivered

  • Supplies a secure repository with high-integrity for project and facility information

  • Provides complete access control of objects and users for the view and update of data

  • Improves quality of engineering and technical data handover from execution into operations

  • Reduces cost and errors associated with multiple information sources by eliminating the boundaries between them

The SmartPlant Foundation server architecture and the server application software:

  • Allows the data to be split over different domain groups, such as schema, document, and published data

  • Facilitates the sharing of information between different design tools

  • Optimizes the server application pool to use multiple worker processes for concurrent tasks to help improve scalability

  • Provides an optional Consolidated Data Warehouse domain that exposes data published by different tools in a single consolidated domain for comparison
