Data segregation by using configurations must not be confused with data segregation by using domains. Domains separate the data being created or published according to the authoring tool, (such as Smart P&ID) or the SmartPlant Foundation feature from which it originates or in which it exists.

A configuration-controlled item can be hidden from any users by controlling their access to the configuration. With multiple projects running, this mean the users working on each of the projects can be prevented from seeing or modifying another project's data, but they can all see the configuration independent data at the plant level. Users can only see another project's data if they are granted access to the other project.

Data and documents can be created in any configuration. However, before you can make isolated changes to data or documents, you must first claim them down into the relevant lower configuration. Before any changes can be merged back up into the higher configuration as new data, you must first resolve any conflicts that have been found.
