To change any as-built data in a project, the items must first be claimed into the project.

When you claim data items, they are reserved for change within the project. When you claim documents, they are revised to create a new working revision within the project. When you claim items, any related items can be automatically claimed as well, depending on their relationship configuration in the schema. Reference file management controls any related documents in a similar way.

SmartPlant Foundation can also be configured to control how users make parallel changes to the same item.

  • Exclusive Claim (Pessimistic) - When a user has claimed an item for their updates, no other user can claim, edit, or update that item until the claim has been released or the item has been merged back to the higher configuration.

  • Nonexclusive Claim (Optimistic) - Allows for parallel changes and is named Optimistic as this is when the user hopes that few conflicts are created when merging the project into the plant. Users are informed when a parallel change is initiated, and conflict resolution helps to prevent the overwriting of data. The same data and documents can be changed in multiple projects.

There are two ways of establishing a non-exclusive claim:

    • Explicit claim - Where an item is first claimed into a project before any changes are made to the item at the project level.

    • Implicit claim - Where an item is automatically claimed into a project when you make a change to a plant item when working at the project level.

In implicit claim mode, items are automatically claimed into the user's active project as they are modified with commands, such as Update. However, this is possible only if those items are in the plant found above the project.

  • In the implicit mode, the user can chose to be notified of the claim before the update takes place.

  • You can configure SmartPlant Foundation to force all users to work in explicit mode. If this option is not set, users can elect to work in implicit mode.
