Between Update 24 and Update 32:

In the create and update forms using the Relationship Maintenance and Relationship Filter display types, you can use the Show pinned items only toggle to view the items pinned by you and include them in the search results.
Between Update 18 and Update 23:

In the create and update forms using the Relationship Maintenance and Relationship Filter display types, the search box uses the target object's name as the default filter to populate the values. The added results are displayed in a grid layout. Using the filters available, you can further refine the search results.
Before Update 18:

In the create and update forms using the Relationship Maintenance and Relationship Filter display types, VIEW CRITERIA provides additional filters to further refine the search results. To configure additional filters, you need to create a column set and relate the column set to this display item with SPFDisplayItemFilterColumnSet. Each column item in the column set acts as a filter.
