Standard Database for Smart Reference Data Version
12.2

SDB Merge Tool is a utility that connects to two SDB databases and displays the differences in data between the two databases in the user interface.

The tool compares the data that exists in both the databases and displays it in a data grid side by side. Using this visual representation, users can choose which data they want to merge from the source database into the target database. Merging of data is always from the source to target database. Below is a screenshot of the Merge Tool.

The Merge Tool can also report the data from both the source and target databases in an Excel file. The user can click a node and report the data related to that object. The data is reported for each attribute value side by side. This allows users to easily compare the data differences.

The SDB Merge Tool shows the differences between two databases in a tree hierarchy view, with an option to merge all the source only data and data differences from source to target databases.

Users can log in to the Merge Tool using two modes:

Differences not shown in hierarchy - The tree hierarchy cannot filter the tree nodes based on data filter options.

Show differences in hierarchy - The tree hierarchy can filter the tree nodes based on data filter options.

  • Selective Merge of Data: In this mode, user can merge the required data only after complete database comparison is completed.

  • Complete Merge of Data: In this mode, all the data will be merged from source database to target database.

The following screenshot shows the mode options of the Merge Tool.

Merge Tool Modes

Differences not shown in hierarchy

When a user logs in using this mode, the tree hierarchy does not have the functionality to filter the tree nodes based on the data filter options. In this view, all the Identical nodes appear in a black font, whereas Different records are shown in orange. If the node exists only in the source or target database, it appears in blue with an (S) suffix or (T) suffix, respectively.

The following screenshot shows the user interface of the tool when it is used in this mode.

Differences not shown

Show differences in hierarchy

When a user logs in using this mode, the tree hierarchy has the functionality to filter the tree nodes based on the data filter options. In this view all the Identical nodes have a black font color, whereas different nodes are shown in an orange font color. For Different nodes, the parent nodes to the root node level are highlighted in an orange font color, indicating to the user that the child nodes have differences.

Using this mode, the user can filter Identical, Different, Source Only, and Target Only nodes by checking and unchecking the data filters available above the hierarchy.

The following options are provided in Show differences in hierarchy mode:

  • Selective Merge of Data - If the user selects selective merge of data and clicks Next, the user is navigated to the Merge Tool user interface with the differences shown in the hierarchy.

  • Complete Merge of Data - If the user selects Complete Merge of Data is a feature released in SDB 2020. If the user selects this option and clicks Next, the complete merge of data between source to target database starts.

    • Status “Not Started” indicates that the merging of data between source and target databases is not yet started. Status “Completed” indicates that the merging of data between source and target databases is completed.

    • An HTML log file is generated when complete merge of data is performed from source to target database, which reports all the data changes/additions into target database.

The following screenshot shows the user interface of the tool when it is used in this mode.

Show differences_UI

The SDB Merge Tool is provided with the ability to compare Non-CMS and CMS data separately. When user selects the Show differences in hierarchy an option is provided to compare the Non-CMS data and the CMS data separately. This granular approach would provide the flexibility to run the comparison of the Non-CMS and CMS data together or one after another.

Recommendation: For performance reasons, we recommend you compare the Non-CMS data and CMS data in two separate steps. In other words, first compare the Non-CMS data and then compare the CMS data.

The following screenshot shows the data comparison options which display when user selects Show differences in hierarchy.

The Standard Database product was enhanced to add all the sample data related to the Smart Materials workflows (E&PI (BOM), E&PI(Requisition), MSCM and Site modules).

For achieving the data migration, SDB Merge Tool now provides a new option to migrate/copy the Smart Material related project data from SDB database to the customer SDB instance, in a single go.
