Derives the reference parameters for placing steel member from point clouds.

To fit a steel member using point cloud seed points,

  1. Select CloudWorx > Fit Point Cloud > Steel.

    OR

Click on the CloudWorx ribbon bar.

A dialog displays until the command is cleared (with right-click).

The Maximum RMS Error box displays the sampling error of the original point cloud. If the fit quality does not meet this number, the fit is rejected.

  2. In the Fit Steel dialog, specify the cross-section type from the list. Available options are I-Section, Rect Tube, C-Channel, T-Section, and L-Angle.

  3. Select the first seed point and second seed point on the steel member to generate a point cloud graphic line along the cardinal point of the steel member.

The first seed point must be in a place where the cut section has a good shape of steel section, and there is no other object nearby. The second seed point identifies the approximate steel sweep direction. The length of the steel must be confined within the two seed points.

After the command is executed successfully, a point cloud graphic line is created and added to Point Cloud Graphics filter.

The name of the steel member has the following format:

    Steel_I_Dxxx_Wyyy_Oxxx

Where I is the cross-section type, Dxxx (in mm) is the depth of the steel member, Wxxx (in mm) is the width of the steel member, and Oxx (in degrees) is the orientation of the steel member.

    • Make sure that you select the correct points for fitting the steel member. Also, ensure to select seed points where there are no objects adjacent to the steel member. Otherwise, the software might fail to figure out the object and thereby to generate the point cloud graphic line depending on where the seed points are selected.

    • This is a recursive command. You can use it again to fit another steel member. To stop the command, right-click.

  4. Set the task to Structure.

  5. Select the Place Linear Member System command.

  6. Select the first and second points on the point cloud graphic line generated on the steel member.

The software generates the glyph for fitting the steel member along the member path.

  7. From the Cardinal point list, select the cardinal point to Center.

  8. From the Section name list, select the required section with the inputs generated in the point cloud graphic line and click Ok.

  9. From the Angle list, set the orientation as obtained in the point cloud graphic line and press Enter.

The steel member is placed along the selected path.

  10. Change to view to Top and verify that the 3D object accurately aligns to the point clouds. If required, adjust the angle, width, and depth of the steel member.
