In EAM, the core equipment screens are comprised of the four main types of equipment: locations, systems, positions, and assets. Linear references can be attributed to assets, positions, and systems in the application.

To access the equipment screens in EAM for defining linear references, browse to:

  • Equipment < Assets

  • Equipment < Positions

  • Equipment < Systems

The table below highlights important attributes of the Equipment screens that make the equipment linear:

Field

Description

Equipment Length and UOM

Length of the equipment, and the unit of measure for the length. Select meters, kilometers, feet, or miles.

Linear Reference UOM

Select meters, kilometers, feet, or miles. This value defaults to the selected value of the Equipment Length UOM but can be overwritten.

If you have specified the road length in kilometers, but you want to identify the position of the features of the road, like bus stops, traffic signals, etc. in meters, you can select a different UOM here than you selected for the Equipment Length UOM.

The selected UOM here is used on the Linear References tab of the equipment screens (see later in this document) and on the Work Order screens. So, working with the linear equipment in HxGN EAM is all based on this value.

Reference Precision

The precision of the displayed Equipment Length on the Linear Reference tab of the equipment screen. This precision has no impact on the definition of the position of the features along the length of the equipment. Meaning the From Point and the To Point can be defined with a precision between 0 and 6 decimal places regardless of the selected Reference Precision.

Geographical Reference

Short free text reference regarding the linear equipment.

Inspection Direction

Typical direction in which an equipment inspection is performed. System Codes entity FLOW, system code INDI.

Flow

Typical direction in which the process flows. For example, the traffic direction or the direction in which a medium (oil, gas, waste water, etc.) flows through a pipe. System Codes entity FLOW, system code PRFL.

Linear Cost Weight

The weight of the equipment that determines the percentage of the work order costs it gets assigned when costs roll up from the child to the parent. This field is only relevant if costs roll up to multiple parents, and hence only available on the Systems screen. See Example below.

From Point

Starting point of the linear equipment. If you leave this blank the system assumes zero. By entering a From Point all linear references related to this equipment will "shift" relative to this From Point. For example, a 10-mile stretch of highway that begins at mile marker 65 will show a stop sign that is located after 1 mile on the linear equipment, as if it is located at 66 miles. Because From Point is also used to identify where the work starts, we may refer to this field as the "equipment starting point" in this brief when needed for clarity.

To Point

The end of the linear equipment. The Equipment Length is defaulted to the difference between To Point and From Point. However, you can override that default as required. System will set Equipment Length Override accordingly.

To Point and From Point are both defined in the Linear Reference UOM, not the UOM in which the equipment length is specified.

Equipment Length Override

  • Selected if the From Point and To Point are both entered, and the difference does not match the calculated equipment length.

Linear Equipment Type

System Codes type entity LETP. System types include the following:

  • Right of Way (RTOW) - A right of way consists of one or more routes. It is usually a more logical identification of a linear equipment. For example, the Eastern Parkway Line (NY City Subway) and Interstate 40 (I-40).

  • Route (ROUT) - A route belongs to a right of way and may itself consist of one or more linear segments. Examples are track 1 and 2 of the Eastern Parkway Line and the east and west bound lanes on I-40.

  • Segment (SEGM) - The smallest increment of a route. Segments are usually linear themselves, but can also be point assets, for example in cases where a switch is not defined with a length.

If you do select a type here, you must also select a Direction. You can create and work with linear equipment without specifying a Linear Equipment Type.

Direction

The "general" direction in which a linear equipment is defined. If the starting point lies in the south and the linear equipment ends in the north, i.e., linear references with a higher from/to point are further north, then select north as the direction. You can define direction values on System Codes entity LDIR.

  • If you do enter a direction, you must also select a Linear Equipment Type. You can create and work with linear equipment without specifying a direction. But if you leave both these fields blank you will not be able to use:

  • Specify the Offset, Offset Percentage and Offset Direction to determine the exact position of a feature or a work requirement, relative to a selected linear reference, like a milepost or signal for example.

  • The trace function to collect related routes and segments using branches and crossovers to define work requirements.

Class

Class on the equipment screens serves the same well-known purpose it serves throughout HxGN EAM. But with respect to linear equipment, it has an additional purpose. On the Class screen you can predefine linear references for the different equipment classes. When you next assign one of these classes to linear equipment, the system will copy the linear references from the class to the equipment.
