When a workflow action is overdue (that is, the target date is reached), the To Do List icon turns red.

When the To Do List icon turns red, you can start the expiration process using the File > Perform Expiration Checks command, and create a new expiration scheduler task, if one does not already exist.

The scheduler task checks the dates and sends an e-mail reminder.

If the number of days to re-assign is reached, the step is re-assigned to:

The owner of the change object, if a change object is being passed down the workflow.
