In addition to creating tags using the standard dialog box in SmartPlant Master Tag Registry, you can also create tags in a special Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and import them into the database and the MTRAuthoring domain. This Microsoft Excel spreadsheet is called a data sheet and contains mapping information that is used to map specific cells in the spreadsheet with properties in the database. For more information, see Data Sheets.

Before generating a datasheet with the tag data, make sure the required security settings for Microsoft Excel are configured on your client workstation. To configure security settings for Microsoft Excel, see Changing security settings in Excel.

The following procedures explain how to create the data sheet, populate it with tag data, and import that data into SmartPlant Master Tag Registry.

Generate a data sheet template

  1. Click Find > Datalist Definitions, and search for the MTR authored data list definitions.

  2. Right-click a data list definition, and click Generate MTR Datasheet Template.

  3. Select a location where you want to save the data sheet.

  4. In the File name box, type a name for the data sheet, and then click Save.

    • By default, the data sheet name is saved as <Datalist definition name><(Template file name)> in .xlsm format. For example, the instrument type data sheet name is saved as MTRAuthoredInstrumentDLD (SPMTRAuthoredInstrumentTemplate).

    • The data sheet can be accessed, reviewed, and edited by other users without using SmartPlant Foundation. The file can be moved as necessary.

  5. Browse to the downloaded data sheet created, and open it using Microsoft Excel.

  6. Enter information about the tag in the data sheet, as necessary. To populate the data sheet with tag information, see Create tags in a data sheet.

Import tags into the authoring domain

  1. In SmartPlant Master Tag Registry, click File > Excel Import > Excel Import to import the modified data sheet with tags.

  2. Browse to the Microsoft Excel file that contains the tag information you want to load, and click Open.

  3. Click Browse browse to open the Select Data list Template dialog box, where you can select the appropriate data list template for the specific type of tags you are importing. Click OK.

By default, data list definitions are delivered with the SmartPlant Master Tag Registry for standard tag types. You can find the data list definitions on Smart Community. For more information, see Find sample data on Smart Community. .

SHARED Tip To view all the data list definitions delivered with the software, click Find > Datalist Definitions.

  4. Click Next to load the tags.

Click Finish.

When you successfully import new tags from a datasheet, the Create Authoring Tags Log.txt log file is generated. This file lists tag numbers and sequence numbers (provided in the datasheet by the ENS). The log file is located at [drive]:\Windows\temp.

If a tag's assigned sequence number in the datasheet is not available in the defined ENS, the system allocates the next available sequence number for that tag. The following log file illustrates this case.
